About Us

Brief History of Isiobi

Isiobi was born following the marginalization of the Igbos in Nigeria by the federal government and other major ethnic groups.
The ill-treatment the Igbos face wherever they go in Nigeria, has been documented in so many places both nationally and internationally. This treatment is worse in the northern and the western part of the country. One of these ill treatments included when Ariwas in Nigeria asked the Igbos to vacate their (Ariwa) land. This resulted in some Igbos vacating the area while some that were unable to vacate were met with so much violence, intimidations, destruction of properties and killings which has grown worse since the 1914 amalgamations.
This marginalisation led some prominent Igbos in the United Kingdom to come together to seek peaceful ways of fostering peace and unity to improve the welfare of the Igbos in Nigeria.
These men and women came together to form an avenue where they can meet with one another to seek a peaceful way forward through engaging both Nigerian and international governments including UK government. The first meeting was held in Woolwich Arsenal London where everyone welcomed the idea. A broadcast was made via Ben and Igboamaka television stations – mediums used to educate Nigerians on the seriousness of the sufferings of the Igbos in Nigeria. At this point, the committee called Igwe in council was inaugurated. Headed by notable Igbo men and women.
Other meetings followed with the same goal at the center of discussions. Following the progress of the Igwe in council and the growing interest of the Igbos in the UK towards this mission, it was agreed in one the meetings, to convey the existence and aim of the Igwe in council to all Igbo traditional rulers in Nigeria to seek their blessings and support towards greater heights for the missions of the Igwe in council and at the same time asking for permission to install an approved traditional stool to represent tradition and voices of the Igbos both in Nigeria, UK & Ireland.
During the time of preparation to embark on this journey, the name of Igwe in council was changed to Selected Committee for Igbo matters.
The journey to visit the Igbo traditional rulers was then embarked upon and was very successful. All the traditional rulers from the 5 Igbo states were visited and they unanimously approved this mission and gave their blessings and support.
Due to the large population of the Igbos in the UK & Ireland and the vast areas of residence, it was agreed that the communion of all Igbos will be structured through the institution of Obi as is traditional in Igbo land and all the Obi’s will be led by an Eze who will be referred to as EZEISIOBI with the headquarters in London known as ISIOBI.
All arrangements were made with all protocols observed and that led to the first installation and coronation of Eze Okwuchukwu Odimegwu Nwosu as the first EZEISIOBI of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
